Silence is deadly: Facing Down Stigma in the Trades

01 January 0001

In the trades, toughness is part of the job. You work through early starts, long days, tight deadlines, rising costs, awkward customers, heavy materials, and whatever the British weather decides to throw at you. The pressure is constant and, for many, completely invisible.

But behind the graft and good humour, something far more serious is happening.

According to the latest ONS data, construction and trade workers are almost four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average. These aren’t just statistics - they’re colleagues, friends, family members and customers. For too long, many in the industry have been carrying enormous mental pressure in silence.

It’s time to face that stigma head on.

The silent load many carry

Recent research into mental health across the trades paints a stark picture.

Many tradespeople report experiencing mental health struggles at some point, with loneliness, financial worries, inconsistent work, and physical exhaustion all playing a role.

And the pressure doesn’t stop there:

  • 93% of tradespeople have been impacted by mental ill health in some way.
  • 73% are experiencing or have experienced anxiety, depression or low mood.
  • 1 in 3 say their job is damaging their mental health.
  • Many work alone for long stretches, with no one around to spot the signs.

Silence becomes the default, not because people don’t care, but because the culture has taught tradies to just “crack on”.

But the cost is devastating. Every time someone feels they can’t speak up, the stigma tightens its grip. And the risk rises.

Why talking still feels so hard

The stigma around men’s mental health is deep, but within the trades it can feel even stronger.

Our recent survey shows:

  • Only 1 in 4 feel able to talk to their family.
  • Just 21% would confide in friends.
  • Young workers (18-24) are especially reluctant to open up.

This silence isn’t about weakness - it’s about culture.

When you’re used to being self reliant, sorting problems yourself, and keeping the job moving no matter what, speaking up can feel like a risk. As one insight put it:

“Tradespeople are used to solving problems on their own. That mindset can make it harder to admit when things feel overwhelming.”

But the truth?

Asking for support is just another form of problem solving.

You’re not alone - and you’re not supposed to do this alone

Pressure isn’t a personal failing. It’s a by product of working in one of the toughest industries in the UK.

Common pressures reported across the trades include:

  • Cost of materials
  • Cashflow uncertainty
  • Having too much work - or not enough
  • Tool and van theft fears
  • Physical exhaustion
  • Responsibility for staff or apprentices
  • Working long hours without a break or support network

These are real, serious stressors. And they require real, practical support - not silence.

Support that’s built for the trades

Talking about mental health is a powerful first step, but support needs to go further. That’s why Trade Direct Insurance partnered with Zurich to make Zurich Support Services available to all eligible customers.

This includes:

  • 24/7 confidential helpline
  • Up to 5 counselling sessions with a qualified professional
  • Support for anxiety, low mood, stress, bereavement, family pressures
  • Help with childcare, elder care, housing and money worries
  • Fast access to guidance when life feels overwhelming

Support that’s private. Professional. And ready when you are.

On top of that, your Mental Health Support Hub provides:

  • Crisis contacts (Samaritans, Mind)
  • Real stories from tradespeople
  • Practical guides and wellbeing tips
  • Signposting for financial and legal support

This hub exists for one reason: because no one in the trade should feel they have to handle things alone.

How we break the stigma - together

Facing down stigma doesn’t happen in silence. It happens in small moments, human moments when someone chooses to speak up, check in, or simply say, “Mate, you alright?”

Here’s how we all play a part:

1. Normalise conversations

Asking a mate how they’re doing isn’t prying. It can be lifesaving.

2. Recognise the signs

Changes in mood, messy paperwork, missed jobs, withdrawing, irritability - all can be signals.

3. Share support options

Most tradies don’t know what’s available to them. Signposting matters.

4. Challenge the old stereotypes

Being strong doesn’t mean being silent. It means taking action when things aren’t right.

5. Make it safe to talk

If someone opens up to you, listen. You don’t need solutions, just presence.

The Bottom Line: Silence is Deadly. Talking Isn’t.

The pressures of the job are real. But so is the support.

You are not alone. You’re not a burden. And you don’t have to “just get on with it.”

Whether you’re a sole trader, apprentice, team leader, or business owner, speaking up could save your life - or someone else’s.

If things feel heavy today, reach out.

And if you think someone else might be struggling, check in.

One conversation can change everything.

Because you matter.

Your life matters.

And no one in the trades should ever suffer in silence.
